Crafting Your Own Wood and Epoxy Charcuterie Board: A Step-by-Step Guide

When it comes to creating stunning kitchenware, few things are as visually striking and practical as a wood and epoxy charcuterie board. These boards combine the natural beauty of wood with the glossy, durable finish of epoxy resin, making them not just functional but also pieces of art. If you're eager to embark on this creative journey, let's dive into how you can pour your own wood and epoxy charcuterie board using an epoxy mold.

Materials You'll Need:

  1. Wood Slab: Choose a hardwood slab that suits your design aesthetic and size preferences. Common choices include walnut, maple, or oak.

  2. Epoxy Resin: Opt for a high-quality epoxy resin designed for woodworking projects. Consider the brand's curing time and clarity. We are using TotalBoat Epoxy for all our epoxy needs.

  3. Epoxy Mold: We are using Ahonui Epoxy forms made from HDPE and specially designed to hold your wood and epoxy securely and with no leaks. These forms are reusable for years to come and allow for built-in clamps to help hold down your woods from floating.

  4. Woodworking Tools: This includes a saw (bandsaw or circular saw), sander (belt sander or orbital sander), and clamps.

  5. Protective Gear: Gloves, safety goggles, and a respirator mask to ensure safety when working with epoxy resin.

  6. Miscellaneous Supplies: Mixing containers, stirring sticks, release agent (such as mold release wax), and a heat gun or torch for removing air bubbles.

Step 1: Prepare Your Wood Slab

Start by selecting a wood slab and cutting it to the desired size and shape using a saw. You want the wood to fit snuggly in the mold you are using. Sand the wood thoroughly, progressing through grits from coarse to fine (e.g., 80 to 220 grit), to achieve a smooth surface. Ensure the edges are clean and free of splinters.

Step 2: Prepare Your Epoxy Mold

Make sure to have a clean mold before any project. The Ahonui molds do not have to have mold release but you can apply it if desired. The molds are put together with screws and gasket material so there is no need for silicone or any sealant around the corners.

Step 3: Seal the Wood

If desired, you can prevent air bubbles from forming in the wood by sealing the surface with a thin coat of epoxy resin or a specific wood sealer. This step ensures a smoother finish and enhances the natural grain of the wood.

Step 4: Mix the Epoxy Resin

Follow the manufacturer's instructions to mix the epoxy resin. Typically, this involves combining the resin and hardener in precise ratios and stirring thoroughly for several minutes. The usual time of stiring for TotalBoat Epoxy is 5 mins or until any swirl marks are not visible in the clear epoxy. Once your epoxy is mixed well, you can add any pigments you desire. We use Black Diamond Pigments for all of our colors.

Step 5: Place the Wood Slab

Carefully place the prepared wood slab into the mold, ensuring it is centered and level. Press it down gently to ensure good contact with the bottom of the form. The Ahonui forms have HDPE blocks and clamps built in to help in securing your wood down and prevent it from floating in your epoxy.

Step 6: Pour the Epoxy Resin

After securing the wood slab, continue pouring the epoxy resin into the mold, covering the wood completely or to the desired height. Use a heat gun or torch to remove any air bubbles that rise to the surface, moving it lightly over the resin without overheating.

Step 7: Cure and Demold

Allow the epoxy resin to cure according to the manufacturer's instructions, typically for 24 to 48 hours. Once fully cured, carefully demold your charcuterie board. Sand any rough edges or excess resin using progressively finer grits until you achieve a smooth finish.

Step 8: Final Finishing

Apply a food-safe finish to the wood portion of your charcuterie board to enhance its natural beauty and protect it from moisture. Mineral oil or a specialized wood finish are popular choices. Ensure the board is fully dry and cured before using it for serving.

Step 9: Enjoy Your Creation

Your wood and epoxy charcuterie board is now ready to serve as a centerpiece for your culinary creations or a thoughtful gift for friends and family. Display it proudly, knowing that you've crafted a piece that seamlessly blends artistry with functionality.
